Charles S. Lawrence slide collection [graphic]

 Collection
Identifier: AV 138

Scope and Contents

Collection consists of slides depicting covered timber bridges in Ohio. Most slides are exterior views of the bridges, but many are interior photos showing the varied engineering designs used to construct bridges in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Approximately 165 of these historic structures remain in Ohio. Photographer Charles S. Lawrence recorded the official bridge designation number; the date and time the photograph was taken; the lens and the lens setting he used on most of the slide mounts. A map titled "Ohio Covered Bridges" published by the Ohio Historical Society in 1972 accompanies the collection. The bridges are listed on the back of the map by county and bridge designation number. Using the bridge designation number, slides in the collection can be matched to the location of the bridges on the map. The photographer made notes on the map regarding bridges he photographed; bridges he did not photograph; and bridges that he found destroyed. Accompanying the map are more hand written notes from the photographer.
