The articles of incorporation Ohio Historical and Archaeological Society document the formation of the society in Columbus, Ohio on March 12, 1885. The mission of the society was the "promotion of Knowledge of Archeology and History, especially of Ohio, by establishing and maintaining a library of books, manuscripts, maps, charts, etc."

Biographical / Historical

The first meeting of the Ohio Archaeological and Historical Society, the predecessor of the Ohio Historical Society, was held at the home of General Roeliff Brinkerhoff in Mansfield, Ohio in 1875. The society prepared an exhibit for Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876, but was inactive by 1883. With the interest of Governor George Hoadley, the society was revived and incorporated in 1885.
