Calvin Ellis Stowe [graphic]

Scope and Contents Collection contains a carte de visite portrait of Calvin Ellis Stowe, the husband of American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. Stowe met Harriet Beecher when he was a professor at Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1830s. They moved to Maine in 1850 when Stowe took a position at Bowdoin College. Additionally, there is a photographic reproduction of an engraved portrait and a print of a portrait depicting Stowe.

Scope and Contents Collection contains cartes de visite portraits of Civil War soldiers and officers. Most of the portraits depict individual soldiers. A few are portraits of groups of soldiers. Some portraits have soldiers names or regiments recorded on the cards, while many are unidentified. One identified soldier is Oscar Dwight Kelton who served in the 95th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company A. Many of the portraits were taken by Ohio photographers.
